Important before you operate
This page summarizes the WWBOTA general rules. A specific WWBOTA award, special event or national scheme may add different conditions. Always check the current official award page and the local 9M BOTA guidance before making an activation or claiming an award.

1. What counts as a valid activation?
A valid activation requires the activator to complete the minimum number of QSOs from the bunker or bunkers being activated:
- 25 QSOs on HF, or using a combination of HF and VHF.
- 5 QSOs for a VHF-only activation.
- The same station may be worked on multiple bands, and each QSO counts toward the total.
- Different modes on the same band with the same hunter do not count as additional QSOs.
The activator must be operating from the bunker or bunkers being claimed and must meet any additional conditions published for the award or national scheme.
2. Revisiting a bunker
If the first visit does not produce enough QSOs, the official framework allows a return visit to complete the activation. The time limit depends on the award:
Lifetime awards
There is no time limit for subsequent visits used to reach the activation minimum.
Annual awards
Subsequent visits must take place within the same calendar year.
When revisiting to qualify, hunters worked on earlier days may be worked again and those QSOs can count toward the required total.
3. Activating multiple bunkers
An activator may claim up to five bunkers at the same time, but only when the operating position is within the activation zone of every bunker being claimed. The exact activation-zone interpretation may depend on the national scheme or award, so confirm the current local guidance before operating.
4. Logging and award claims
- WWBOTA award eligibility is based on the participant's record in the WWBOTA Logger.
- Claims for WWBOTA awards are submitted through the WWBOTA Awards claims matrix.

5. Activators, hunters and SWLs
WWBOTA is open to radio amateurs and shortwave listeners worldwide. In practical terms:
- An activator operates from a listed bunker and makes contacts.
- A hunter works an activator from another station.
- An SWL listens for activations and follows the logging and award conditions that apply to SWL participation.
These roles can have different eligibility requirements for individual awards. Check the relevant award page before assuming that a contact qualifies.
6. National schemes and safety
WWBOTA awards complement national schemes such as 9M BOTA. The general WWBOTA award rules do not automatically change national rules. For Malaysia, use the official 9M BOTA reference list and confirm local access, permissions, licensing, weather and safety conditions before operating.
Operate safely and legally
Operate near the bunker rather than entering it unless you have explicit permission and it is safe. Respect private property, restricted areas, heritage-site requirements and Malaysian amateur-radio regulations.
